Tree Growth and Structure, Ecology and Conservation

My research integrates tree climbing techniques, dendrometry and tree-ring science to identify those structural and life-history traits allowing old trees to reach the maximum species longevity in different environments, with specific attention to tree architecture, carbon allocation among aboveground organs/tissues, tree productivity dynamics.

I’m currently leading a research project funded by the National Geographic Society to explore the full structure and growth history of the oldest beech trees in natural old-growth forests in central-southern Europe to scientifically describe their unique traits and resilience to environmental changes.
